I am the way , the Truth, and the life .
Without the way there is no going;
Without the Truth, there is no living .
I am the way which you must follow;
The life which you must hope for .
- by Thomas a kempis, Imitation of Christ
Thomas a kempis, a medieval monk , explain Christ's teaching :
"I am the Way" - Only a living Master has the key to reveal the "Truth," the way to attain self-realization. Without "Know- ing," without personal inner experience, there can be no belief, faith, or attainment. Without "Life" - meaning eternal life or bliss - our liberation, which he calls the "life you must hope for," is not possible. And liberation cannot be attained without someone to show the way.
So Jesus says. "I am the Way" - I have the method to connect you to the path of self-realization, the means to the end, "which you must follow" and practise to attain ultimate bliss, and then Truth will be revealed and believed. "I am the Way" and "without the Way" there is no meaning, no Master, no God.
Similarly, Kabir declares: "Without a Master, none can reach the court of the Lord.( Success)
As Guru Nanak taught :
bin satgur kinai na paa'io
bin satgur kinai na paa'ia.
Without the true Guru , no one has obtained the lord(success) ;
Without the true Guru , no one ever can .
These words sum up the method or way to our search for spiritual truth, which is through a Master, a Guru. Gur means technique or method, and the one that gives the method or technique to attain God is the Guru. Without a Master we are rudderless, living in darkness and ignorance, victims of the five deadly passions of the mind, intricately bound and shackled by maya or materialism, stuck in the cycle of birth and death. unable to free ourselves from this worldly bondage, unable to merge with the Absolute because without a Master we cannot attain God.
